Why the Mass?

MASS IS A BORE.

We don't go to Mass to be entertained, but to assist. No wonder you're bored. If I had to regard most of the Masses I've attended from the point of view of plain old entertainment value, I'd have been bored too. Mass is a supernatural action that transcends time and space. It unites Heaven and Earth. It is the closest thing to Heaven on Earth. The external trappings of the Mass are largely irrelevant. Mass cannot compete with Holywood, your favourite music or your favourite 'thang' - whatever it is. Mass doesn't compete with anything; it isn't supposed to. Mass is above all else.

I GET NOTHING OUT OF THE MASS.

Jesus is really present at Mass whether we believe it or not. If someone "gets nothing out of Mass" the fault does not lie with the Mass, but rather with the failure of the person to be properly pre-disposed to reap the awesome benefits it offers. Mass always delivers; if we get nothing out of it, it was because we were not open to the delivery. Mass is the greatest of all the Sacraments because it gives us Christ Himself. All Sacraments give grace (the holy power we need to get to Heaven) but their effects are normally super-sensible (ie we usually don't 'feel' anything after we've received them). Grace is for our spiritual souls, not our physical bodies. But if received openly, grace always makes us better people. Holy Communion at Mass is the most obvious source of grace.

THEY CALL MASS A 'CELEBRATION' BUT EVERYONE IS SO SERIOUS.

The word 'celebration' has two different meanings: 1) a joyous and fun time

or 2) a solemn action. Mass is the latter type of celebration because at it we are witnessing the unbloody re-presentation of our Creator-Redeemer's sacrifice on the Cross for us " hardly a moment for laughing and joking. Is 1 hour a week too much too ask?

MASS IS JUST FULL OF HYPOCRITES WHO THINK THEY'RE BETTER THAN ME.

If it is true that Mass is full of hypocrites, then there's always room for one more! The vast majority of people who attend Holy Mass do so because they recognise their own hypocrisy " and all their other failings. Mass goers are there because they humbly recognise themselves as sinners " they know they need all the help they can get.

WHAT USE IS THE MASS?

It's of more use than anything else you could think of:

- There is more value in one Mass (because its value is infinite) than in all the merely natural good works accomplished by all individuals in the whole world

- At the hour of death, the Holy Mass you have heard devoutly will be your greatest consolation

- Every Mass will go with you to Judgement, and will plead pardon for you

- By devoutly assisting at Holy Mass, you render the greatest homage possible to God

- One Holy Mass, heard during your life will be of more benefit to you than many heard for your soul after your death

- You shorten your Purgatory by every Mass

- By piously hearing Holy Mass, you afford the souls in Purgatory the greatest possible relief
